I already posted my my 10 reasons for the Spaces Wolves. Now here are 10 things that drove and drive me away from them.
- The Babyblue – Although Games Workshops calls it “Russ Grey” or “Fenrisian Grey”, it’s not grey, what the Minis look like – it’s Babyblue. And once you know it and have seen it, you can’t unsee and unknow it. The Alternative is even worse: The “real” Grey the Astartes wore, when they were a Legion. Nothing is more boring than Grey.
- Change of the Colour Scheme from 30k to 40k – And yeah … that’s silly too: The Mark IV and the Mark VI Armour look soo great, that it’s a shame that you have to decide, wether to use them in your 40k Army or in an 30k Army. I mean … that’s one of the few good things about choosing a Chapter, that originated from a Legion: You – theoretically – can play both with one Army. But not with the Wolves. Or at least not with both Colour Schemes.
- Fenris is a bit too much – The Landscape shifting every year and Megapredtors, that hunt Megapredators, that are hunted by Megapredators. Of all Kinds. Mostly Wolves – naturally – but also Dragons and probably everything you can come up with. For me, it really is beyond even the most the willing suspension of disbelieve. The Fact that humans survived there and in a state of the Iron Ages … I just can’t believe that.
- No Apothecarii – That’s a real bummer for me. I still love them more than any other Concept within the Space Marines: Physician clad in the traditional White, Men who heal, who save Lifes … and walk around the Battlefield als
Godsthe Emperors greatest Killing Machines. I just have to love them. They are a Contradiction in terms and in that the best represent the sick, twisted Nature of the Astartes. - All the wolfy Bits are hard to paint – All the Wolf Tails, Teeth, Runes and Stones carved with Runes don’t make it easier to get an okay painted Army, especially not for beginners. And I haven’t even spoken of all the Wolves, who refuse to wear a Helmet.
- “All the Wolf you could ever wolfy wolf wolf” – to quote 1d4chan on this one. It really is a good bit over top in the Codices: Every second thing has a wolf in its name. And quite often without any need. “Lightning Claws” is just a fine name for that weapon. No need to give it a new one. Sigh.
- They are popular – In fact they are probably the most popular Faction of the whole 40k Setting, if you count every Chapter / Legion for itself. Making a decision for an Underdog Army, even an Underdog Legion offers a lot of nice things: Usually you got tighter bonds within the Community, you can field an Army that is a rare sight and theres a good chance, that your not the 1000th Guy who has the same Ideas for names, colour schemes and kit-bashing.
- They are not genuine to 40k – They are Vikings in Space. As cool as the Idea might be, there are Legions an Chapters that are more genuine to 40k, like the Iron Hands or the Imperial Fist. You have to admit, that you’re just a rip-off in Space.
- Footslogging is out of Fashion – This is true for the Space Wolves as well as for most other Astartes Factions: Your are usually forced to choose 20 or 30 footslogging Marines as Troops in your Army, but the game doesn’t reward that. Astartes on foot are to slow to secure the objectives and both Rhinos and Drop Pods are very much not my thing.
- Abuse of the Mythology – This is a complicate one … the Nordic Mythology brings a Legacy of abuse with it. It has been abused by the (real) Nazis and is still being abused by right-wing extremists. Getting into the Wolves has a bigger Chance to lead you to a situation, where you end up in a Forum or at a Table, with people you’d rather prefer to avoid. To get this cristal clear: I haven’t met any extreme right-wing players yet (or at least they didn’t advocate that), and I am not saying that Wolf-Players are more right winged than others. I simpy don’t know any facts. What I do know is that right-wing extremists are frequently attracted to Nordic Mythology. Getting into the same field just might lead to problems for you; it doen’t have to; but it might.Or to put it the other way round: To go with a Chapter, that actively reduces this risk, like the White Scars for example, had a strong attraction for me.
And and 11th reaons … my Wife hates Wolves. 😀
