My Advanced Tau Tactica Membership Profile

Advanced Tau Tactica is one of the best 40k Forums around … if you’re on the Tau side of the dark Millenium. In order to get to know each other, they suggest to answer a questionaire. Due to the horror that is know as the GDPR, they closed the Membership Profiles Forum, which I think is kinda sad, so I just publish my Profile here. You can find me there as “Taemasu“.

Real first name: Benjamin

Age and gender: 43, born in 1975, male.

Location: Bielefeld, Germany (Although the people of Bielefeld love to call their City “Liebefeld” these days.)

Occupation: Father of twos. Founder of and Programmer in a web development Company

How did you get into wargaming?

It all started with HeroQuest and Space Crusade (here known as StarQuest), back in die late 80ies, early 90ies.

How did you get into Tau?

I bought the 2016 Edition of Kill Team, twice (one in English, one in German). Suddenly I had 20 Fire Warriors. As I had the Minis, I wanted to know about their background and bought the Codex. And pretty soon after that I was on fire, bought Commander Shadowsun, a Sniper-Drone-Team and the two Damocles Campaign Suppelmentes “Kauyon” and “Mont’ka”. But I didn’t build or paint anything t’au until recently … the powerfisted grip of the Space Marines held me firmly. Buuut … when the Primaris Marines arrived last Summer, I was so disappointed, that I decided to freeze all my Space Marine efforts and go with a xenos faction instead, with the T’au.

Also … I wrote a small about my 10 reasons for the T’au.

What would be your second piece of advice (after “read the freakin’ rules”) to a new Tau player?

Go with the minis and units that you really love. Never mind the crunch, never mind the retcons! Games should be fun.

What is your Tau colour scheme?

T’au Sept ochre, added with some greys, metals and more white. For decorations: yellow and red chequerboard pattern (a legacy from my old Battletech Minis, and my old love for Battletech is – of course – another reason for the T’au).

How did you find this site/the old site, and how long have you been a member?

I really can’t remeber. I have been lurking and using the forum for research for the last two years, eversince my first enthusiasm for T’au arose (and Bolter and Chainsword didn’t have a Xenos-Sub-Forum back then, hehe).

What are the origins of your ATT username?

Not very creative: It’s Japanese for “Bear”. I use variants of “Bear”” as a Username quite often, because of Ben the Bear from the 70ies TV Show “The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams” (and my first name is Benjamin).

Have you reviewed the ATT Membership & Forum Rules?

I did and am quite impressed by them.

Where and how often do you usually play?

I actually haven’t played anything Warhammer other than the Board Games since the 90ies. But I am currently getting back into the Hobby, together with friend and colleague of mine.

Do you have any other armies, for 40K or another system?

I’m working on a Skaven Army for Warhammer Age of Sigmar.

What is your favourite and least favourite army to play against?

Really can’t say.

What is your best and worst 40K moment?

Best Moment: Combining two Space Crusade Boxes for an all-weekend campaign, filling the best part of the huge living room of my best friend, back in the days.

Worst Moment: A few weeks after the Primaris arrived and I realised, that they spoil the whole concept of Space Marines for me, and I do have more than a few Euros in unboxed Minis now …

What does/do your family/significant other/friends think about your ‘funny toys’?

Most of them are quite patient about it, especially my wife. But “the Hobby” is very, very, _very_ hard to explain to anyone. I usually don’t even try. But: My kids love it, when I build an paint Minis.

What are some of you other interests?

I studied Literature, Philosophy and Text-Technology (a sub-discipline of Computational Linguistics), and thus (Web) Programming, and I still love all of the afore mentioned quite a lot.

All sorts of other Boardgames. Pen and Pager Roleplaying Games, like Fate, Earthdawn, Shadowrun, Degenesis, Achtung! Cthulhu.

Franko-belgian Graphic Novels as well as the Novels of Jeff VanderMeer, Joseph Conrad, Patrick O’Brian (Master and Commander), Albert Camus, Doris Lessing, Kim Stanley Robinson and lately Joe Abercrombie. And the Works of William Shakespeare, of course.

Cooking. Mostly stew and things that go with pasta. Quite a lot vegetarian in the last years.

Foreign cultures, esp. those of Japan (studied that too), Mongolia and Scandinavia (which is not all too foreign for a german). Politics, Science esp. Evolution, Biology and Philosphy (no surprise here).

Do you have any pets?

No.

What is your favourite band?

Maybe the most difficult Question, hehe, it’s even hard to name a few. So I’ll start in biographical order: Tocotronic (German), Björk, Tool, Bad Company (the UK DnB-Team), 65daysofstatic, We were promised Jetpacks, Matthew Halsall and the Gondwana Orchestra.
